The average household size in Malaysia fell from 4.0 in 2014 to 3.8 in 2024, with first marriage at 27.1 years for men and 24 for women, says Nancy Shukri.

KUALA LUMPUR: The average household size in Malaysia fell from 4.0 persons in 2014 to 3.8 in 2024, according to findings from the Sixth Malaysian Population and Family Survey (KPKM-6).

Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the findings also revealed a shift in family formation patterns, with the average age at first marriage rising to 27.1 years for men and 24 years for women.

However, she said the desire to start a family remained strong as more than eight out of 10 unmarried individuals expressed an intention to marry, with the lack of a suitable partner (50.6 per cent) and financial constraints (47.2 per cent) cited as among the main reasons they have yet to do so.
