Tawau fire and rescue department chief Moiley Milin said firefighters found the charred remains of the victim, identified as Jackson Zack, in a room, Bernama reported.
The department received an emergency call at 6.44am and fire engines carrying 47 personnel arrived at the scene three minutes later. By then, six houses were already engulfed in flames.
The absence of fire hydrants, narrow access roads and the close proximity of the houses to one another hampered fire-fighting.
