ALOR SETAR: The increase in the duty-free shopping limit to RM10,000 is expected to act as a catalyst for the recovery of the tourism sector and revitalise economic activities on Langkawi Island, which was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

The government’s announcement has received positive feedback from various quarters, including ferry operators and local tourism associations, which described it as a lifeline for the industry.

Langkawi Development Authority chief executive officer Datuk Seri Iskandar Mohd Kaus said the incentive had significant potential to attract more investors to the duty-free business sector on the Jewel of Kedah.

“This move reflects a strategic effort to restore and strengthen Langkawi’s appeal as a premier shopping destination for both domestic and international tourists.
