As Malaysia grapples with worsening haze and unhealthy air quality, the Malaysian Women’s Action for Tobacco Control and Health (MyWatch) expresses grave concern over a disturbing contradiction in our efforts to protect public health.
Schools are being closed, outdoor activities restricted, and Malaysians advised to remain indoors to minimise exposure to harmful air pollution. Yet, what happens when the very homes in which our children and older persons seek refuge are contaminated by cigarette smoke or vape emissions?
Are we protecting our children from the haze outside, only to expose them to another form of toxic pollution inside their own homes? This is an unacceptable and entirely preventable public health hazard.
