The transport ministry has announced that that the Road Transport (Amendment) Act 2026, which amends the Road Transport Act 1987 [Act 333], has now come into force as of today, October 16. The amendments were passed in parliament on June 24 following the second and third readings of the bill.
The updated act 2026 comprises 42 amendment clauses, includes several key improvements, as initially in June. The amendments cover four broad categories, these being digitalisation of services and enforcement, an increase in fine and compound rates, the introduction of new provisions and the strengthening and harmonisation of existing provisions.
They include a new Section 42A, which is aimed at tackling the issue of illegal racing by imposing heavy penalties on offenders, by establishing the act of racing or testing speed on public roads as a specific offence. This provision enables enforcement action to be taken without the need to wait for an accident, injury or loss of life to occur.
