KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's private hospital operators are embarking on a new expansion cycle, driven by existing hospital expansions, acquisitions and new developments, as healthcare groups seek to capture growing demand.

Maybank Investment Bank (Maybank IB) said new private hospital investments remained concentrated in established healthcare markets, namely the Klang Valley, Penang, Johor and Melaka.

"These markets warrant closer attention given differences in local demographics, specialist availability, medical tourism exposure and existing competition," it said.

Among the key players, KPJ Healthcare Bhd aims to increase its capacity to about 6,000 beds by 2030, while IHH Healthcare Bhd targets more than 4,000 beds across its Malaysian operations by the same year.
