KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's digital economy is projected to grow 20 per cent to US$48 billion (RM196 billion) in gross merchandise value (GMV) this year, matching Vietnam as Southeast Asia's fastest-growing digital market.

Robust e-commerce activity and rising artificial intelligence (AI) adoption will drive this growth, according to the 11th edition of the e-Conomy SEA report by Google, Temasek and Bain & Company.

The growth spans all major digital sectors, with e-commerce leading the expansion as businesses increasingly adopt AI-powered tools, video commerce and automated seller services.

The report said Malaysia's e-commerce sector is expected to reach US$25 billion in GMV, up 22 per cent year-on-year, while online travel is projected to grow 15 per cent to US$12 billion.
