Harry Houdini built his reputation on escaping seemingly impossible restraints, turning handcuffs, locks and chains into the tools of his trade. (Wikipedia pic)PETALING JAYA: Harry Houdini spent his life escaping handcuffs, chains, locked boxes and even straitjackets while dangling high above city streets. Yet, a century after his death, the magician has pulled off perhaps his most impressive trick of all - refusing to disappear.

Houdini died in Detroit on Oct 31, 1926 at age 52, and the city is marking the centenary this Halloween with a special programme devoted to his life and legacy.

The Detroit Historical Society notes that he performed there 19 times between 1894 and 1926, with the city also becoming the setting for his final stage appearance and death.
