KUALA LUMPUR: Refugees in Malaysia can leave the country through repatriation to their countries of origin if they have valid travel documents, resettlement in a third country or deportation for violating immigration laws or committing crimes.
Parliamentary Special Select Committee on Human Rights, Elections and Institutional Reform chairman William Leong said the prolonged conflict in Myanmar and reduced third-country resettlement quotas had resulted in refugees remaining in Malaysia for longer periods.
He said this was based on the committee's discussions with the Home Ministry on Nov 25, 2025, on refugee management policies, implementation and challenges.
"Refugee issues in Malaysia were complex, involving national security, human rights, public health, education, the labour market and relations between local communities and foreigners.
