KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia Border Control and Protection Agency (MCBA) seized 637 tonnes of cocoa beans worth nearly RM11.9 million smuggled into the country in a container at Pasir Gudang Port, Johor, on Saturday.

The agency, in a statement, said the beans were detected during an inspection by its enforcement officers about 3.50pm.

It said the beans were in 9,100 gunny sacks and had been brought in from Uganda.

"The value of the beans is estimated at RM11,886,444.72. The goods were found to have been imported with incomplete documentation that aroused suspicion. As such, the entire consignment was seized for further investigation," he said.

MCBA said any act or attempt to declare conflicting information at the country's entry points is an offence under Section 13 of the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Act 2011.
