The LCS project is said to be the largest defence procurement in Malaysia’s history.

PETALING JAYA: Kampar MP Chong Zhemin today asked whether the littoral combat ships (LCS) the navy ordered will still be useful by the time they achieve full operational capability, some 24 years after the project was approved in 2011.

The Auditor-General’s Report 2/2026 released on Monday found that the navy’s first littoral combat ship (LCS 1) might not be fully operational until December 2035.

Debating the report in the Dewan Rakyat today, Chong asked whether LCS 1’s capabilities would meet operational needs, given changes in technology and security threats.

"How many technological changes and how many changes in security threats would have occured over these 24 years? We bought the ship to deal with current threats," he said.
