KUALA LUMPUR: Motorists who cause accidents while driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be required to compensate their victims under a proposed amendment to the Road Transport Act.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government would amend the law to make compensation mandatory for victims of accidents involving drunk or drug-impaired drivers.
Announcing the measure when tabling the 2027 Budget in the Dewan Rakyat today, Anwar said road accidents involving drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs remained a concern despite stricter enforcement.
He cited a fatal accident along the East Coast Expressway Phase 1 (LPT1) in Temerloh on the eve of National Day, which claimed four lives, including those of a husband, wife and their young child.
