KUALA LUMPUR: Seputeh MP Teresa Kok has called on the Home Ministry to explain the planned phased repatriation of 5,000 Myanmar detainees, including 1,476 people involved in the first phase.

Kok said this was necessary given the broader concerns surrounding the management and status of refugees in Malaysia.

"I urge the Home Ministry to provide an explanation to members of Parliament in this House," she said when debating the Committee's Report on Refugee Management in Malaysia in the Dewan Rakyat.

Kok also called for greater transparency in the government's broader approach to refugee registration and management.

She said the report raised several issues surrounding the proposed Refugee Registration Document (DPP), including the need to amend the Immigration Regulations and obtain views from the Sabah and Sarawak state governments.
