PETALING JAYA: Malaysia has a strategic advantage ahead of Asean's next digital leap through its two 5G networks, which are anchored to different technological ecosystems.

However, analysts warn that possible or potential procurement decisions could erode this advantage without explicit safeguards.

Under the dual-network framework, Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) has deployed Sweden's Ericsson technology, while U Mobile's upcoming second network will rely on Chinese telecommunications giants Huawei and ZTE.

This gives Malaysia an uncommon operational bridge between Western- and China-linked technological spheres.
