KUALA LUMPUR: The number of slaughterhouses with Malaysian Halal Certification depends on how many premises apply and meet the prescribed requirements and standards, says the Islamic Development Department (Jakim).

Its director-general, Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee, said the certification was a verification process involving applications, document checks, audits and assessments of compliance with syariah requirements and relevant standards.

"In the case of slaughterhouses, the assessment covers all operational aspects and certification requirements, including compliance with syariah requirements in slaughtering methods, cleanliness and safety, animal handling, premises and equipment, operational management, as well as the implementation of a Halal Assurance System.
