KOTA KINABALU: A moderate earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale struck the waters off Sandakan at 9.11pm tonight.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), in a statement tonight, said the earthquake was detected at coordinates 4.9 degrees North and 118.7 degrees East, at a depth of 10 kilometres.

The epicentre was located about 48 kilometres east of Lahad Datu.

Strong tremors from the earthquake were also felt in parts of Sabah's east coast," it said.

MetMalaysia said it would continue to closely monitor the situation following the earthquake.
