KUALA LUMPUR: The Communications Ministry, through the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas), will study the residual payment or revenue-sharing mechanism for audiovisual works in Malaysia.

Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said the study would take into account three main aspects, namely legislation, the structure of the creative industry ecosystem and current business models, and the practices of streaming platforms and international distributors.

"The study will examine whether the mechanism should be implemented through amendments to existing laws, industry guidelines or standard contracts," he said in a parliamentary written reply today.

He was responding to Kalam Salan (PN-Sabak Bernam) on whether the government planned to introduce a residual payment or rerun royalty mechanism for Malaysian actors.
