KUALA LUMPUR: The East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) could spur industrial development in the SG4 states by improving freight connectivity and opening access to markets in southern Thailand.

Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said the railway should prioritise freight and industrial needs rather than focus mainly on passenger services.

"I think each one of us agrees that ECRL plays a very important role as a transportation hub," he said at a press conference during the SG4 Business and Economic Forum 2026 here today.

He said rail systems elsewhere in the world demonstrated the importance of freight services in supporting industries along railway corridors.
