KUALA LUMPUR: More than 9,000 local jobs, paying average wages 45 per cent above the national median, are expected to be sustained annually under Google’s US$15 billion (RM61 billion) data centre expansion in Malaysia.

Alphabet and Google president and chief investment officer Ruth Porat said the investment, covering 2027 and 2028, would also support more than 37,000 local jobs annually during the construction of new facilities in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan.

Speaking at the Mantap Malaysia Bersama AI event at Universiti Malaya today, she said the projects were projected to contribute an average of US$1.1 billion (RM4.47 billion) annually to Malaysia’s gross domestic product during construction.
