MIC deputy president M Saravanan said Tamil was more than just a language as it also encompasses history, moral values, and philosophy that shape one’s character.PETALING JAYA: MIC has opposed the education ministry’s proposal to reduce the weekly teaching hours of Tamil in vernacular schools, saying the language is vital in developing a student’s intellect, emotion and identity.

The party’s deputy president, M Saravanan, said Tamil was more than just a language as it also encompasses history, moral values, and philosophy that shape one’s character.

“The time allocated for Tamil lessons must not be cut to make room for a new subject or module,” he said in a statement.

Saravanan was responding to plans by the education ministry to trim the minimum teaching time to 10 hours weekly, from the original 12.
