KUALA LUMPUR: The Melaka election can serve as a testing ground for Barisan Nasional's electoral strength and cooperation strategies ahead of the 16th General Election (GE16), said political analysts.

They said BN would have to weigh the opportunity to measure the support it commands against the benefits of a pact, with the implications extending beyond Melaka to its bargaining position ahead of GE16.

Universiti Teknologi Mara political analyst Dr Shafezah Abdul Wahab said BN, particularly Umno, had reason to test its strength by contesting more seats alone.

"Melaka can give BN a clearer indication of its actual support base without relying too heavily on electoral partners," she told the New Straits Times.
