Gopeng MP Tan Kar Hing urged the health ministry to provide data on complaints, proven food contamination cases and penalties imposed on cross-border online food suppliers.

PETALING JAYA: An MP has called for tighter controls on food imported through e-commerce platforms, warning that existing regulations may not adequately cover the growing factory-to-consumer (F2C) business model.

Tan Kar Hing (PH-Gopeng) said food safety controls should cover the entire supply chain, from production and processing to packaging, import and export, distribution and retail, including food sold directly to consumers through digital platforms.

He questioned how the proposed amendments to the Food Act 1983 would regulate food bought by Malaysians online from overseas suppliers for personal consumption.
