KUALA LUMPUR: A former lawyer and Bersatu division chief has failed in his bid to overturn his 18-year jail sentence and 18 strokes of the rotan for misappropriating more than RM1 million from his clients' trust accounts.
However, the Tapah High Court set aside the RM90,000 fine imposed on Firdaus Rizal Abdul Manan, ruling that the additional 54 months' imprisonment in default of payment was excessive.
Judicial commissioner Zaman Mohd Noor ruled that the 18-year jail term was sufficient punishment for the offences.
Firdaus' lawyer, Khesminkapil Singh Dhanoa, confirmed the decision when contacted.
